ANIL KUMBLE SPEAKS AFTER DISASTROUS DAY 2

Just one bad day for India, says coach Kumble

By Sudipto Ganguly
PUNE, India (Reuters) - India coach Anil Kumble gave a measured response on Friday after his team's spectacular collapse against Australia in the opening test, calling it just one bad day for his world No. 1 team.
Replying to Australia's 260, India, unbeaten in their previous 19 tests, lost their last seven wickets for 11 runs to be bundled out for 105 in their first innings.
India's meltdown started after lunch when opener Lokesh Rahul departed after a well-made 64 as Australia left-arm spinner Steve O'Keefe wreaked havoc with six wickets for 35.
"You are bound to have one bad day. It was disappointing," former India captain and leg-spinner Kumble told reporters.
"We were in a pretty decent position when Rahul and Ajinkya (Rahane) were batting out there. But once Rahul got out, we lost those four wickets in five or six balls. That certainty pushed us back," he said, referring to the pitch as "challenging".
The hosts also dropped four catches in Australia's second innings, including three missed chances with world No. 1 batsman Steve Smith to compound their problems.
Smith remained unbeaten on 59 with the touring side leading by 298 runs. India are staring at a steep four-innings target on a wicket providing prodigious turn for the spin bowlers.
Kumble was backing his side, who have won their last six series, to chase down any target.
"We would like to restrict them to as little as possible (on Saturday)," Kumble said. "We dropped a few catches. It has hurt us in the past, especially in this game you need to hold your chances even if half chances."
The pitch at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium has attracted a great deal of criticism on its debut as a test centre but Kumble, India's highest wicket-taker in tests, refused to blame the surface.
"It is a challenging surface which requires application, aggression and a bit of caution as well. You need a mix out of that," he said.
"We have to give credit to the Australian bowlers as well."

Top 5 captain-coach combos in cricket of all-time

Top 5 captain-coach combos in cricket of all-time

It is absolutely paramount for a captain to have a good working relationship with the coach, be it in any sport.
Due to the jammed cricketing schedule these days, they probably end up spending more time with each other than, say, even their wives, and, consequently, have no option but to get along provided they wish to last long enough in their respective jobs. The ramifications of the captain constantly disagreeing with the coach are clear to see with what happened to England when Kevin Pietersen as captain and Peter Moores as coach were in charge, in 2008.
I’m not, however, suggesting that the captain and coach should never have contrasting opinions and should nod in agreement at all times. They are, after all, individuals and are bound to have different points of view. And that is not necessarily harmful, either. There have been many successful captain-coach combos in the past who have actually argued with each other fiercely on several matters. But what is ultimately essential is that both should have respect for each other’s capabilities and think for the betterment of the team rather than having any vendetta or personal motives.
Here are 5 successful captain-coach combos:
#1 MS Dhoni and Gary Kirsten
Sourav Ganguly and John Wright, undoubtedly, did a terrific job when they were in charge of the Indian team from 2000 to 2004. But MS Dhoni and Gary Kirsten, arguably, outdid their predecessors by achieving remarkable success till the latter’s resignation post the 2011 ICC World Cup.
Apart from presiding over India’s Test series victory in New Zealand after a gap of 41 years, they also oversaw India drawing a Test series, 1-1, against a strong Proteas outfit in South Africa for the first time in their history. Also, not to forget their unblemished record at home of not having lost a single series during their tenure.
And then there is, of course, India’s historic ICC World Cup win in 2011, which will remain etched on every Indian fan’s mind for a very long time to come. In fact, the celebrations post that World Cup victory aptly illustrates why the two were so successful together. Despite being absolutely critical to the side having a successful World Cup campaign, they didn’t go overboard while rejoicing and preferred staying in the background, a quality that deeply endeared them to the players.

#2 Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower

Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower were given the reins of the England team, in January 2009, when English cricket was at an all-time low after the long drawn-out saga surrounding Kevin Pietersen and Peter Moores. And they got off to a worst possible start as England were bowled out for an appalling 51 in the 2nd innings of the first Test, at Jamaica in February 2009, thereby suffering an innings defeat against a pretty weak West Indies side. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), however, placed their faith in Strauss and Flower and, deservedly, reaped huge rewards for their decision.
During their time together, from 2009 to 2012, England scaled heights that they had never done before. Apart from winning the Ashes Down Under in 2010-11 for the first time in 24 years, they also achieved the No.1 ranking in Test cricket for the first time ever, by demolishing India – the No.1 side at the time –  4-0 at home, overseeing a period of unprecedented dominance.

#3 Sourav Ganguly and John Wright

Sourav Ganguly and John Wright deserve endless credit for playing pivotal roles in establishing India as a powerhouse in world cricket. They took over in the year 2000 after the match-fixing scandal, one of the toughest times in Indian cricket history, and went about restoring the faith of the Indian cricket fan in an earnest fashion. What made the pair so successful, in my opinion, was the fact that they complemented each other as individuals almost perfectly. While Ganguly was aggressive by nature and wanted to be at the forefront of public attention, Wright was inherently unassuming and content in staying behind the scenes.
Apart from ensuring that India started competing away from home on a consistent basis, they also managed to bring on young players like Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan, who have gone on to serve Indian cricket with distinction for more than a decade.

#4 Nasser Hussain and Duncan Fletcher

Duncan Fletcher, along with captain Nasser Hussain, took charge of England in 1999, and they were entrusted with the difficult task of resurrecting the fortunes of English cricket. They certainly did a magnificent job as they not only presided over famous series wins in Pakistan and Sri Lanka in 2000-01 but also championed the cause of central contracts, which made the England environment more professional than earlier, and laid the platform for England’s Ashes victory in 2005.
Even though it’s been ten years since their captain-coach relationship came to an end as a result of Hussain’s retirement, the fact that they are still in regular touch and have tremendous respect for each other goes to show how strong their bond was. Talking about Fletcher’s strengths when he was appointed coach of India in 2011, Hussain said: “Top players might know they are doing something wrong but Duncan will know instantly exactly what, whether it is stance, grip or trigger movements, and immediately come up with a solution.”

#5 Arjuna Ranatunga and Dav Whatmore

Arjuna Ranatunga and Dav Whatmore are probably an exception in the sense that they were quite successful despite, by all accounts, not getting along during their time as captain and coach, respectively, of the Sri Lankan team. They worked together for a period of 2-3 years and, in that time, masterminded Sri Lanka’s ICC World Cup win in 1996 – their only ICC World Cup triumph till date – which went on to change Sri Lankan cricket for the better forever.
They also played a significant part in moulding a young Muttiah Muralitharan into the champion bowler that he became. In 1995, after all, Murali was just 23 when he was no-balled for chucking, by Australian umpire Darrell Hair, in the Boxing Day Test against Australia. The incident would have, undoubtedly, shattered Murali’s confidence and could have curtailed his career, but both Whatmore and Ranatunga provided complete backing to the bowler. What followed that was there for everyone to see.

Kohli issues Starc warning to India's batsmen in Pune

By Sudipto Ganguly
PUNE, India (Reuters) - Australia paceman Mitchell Starc has raised his game to the next level and India's batsmen need to be wary of his ability to trouble them with reverse swing, home captain Virat Kohli said on the eve of the first test beginning on Thursday.
The 27-year-old left-arm paceman was the leading wicket-taker (24) for the side on the turning pitches in Sri Lanka last year, a series in which Australia were blanked 3-0.
Starc and Kohli have played together for the Bangalore franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 tournament and the paceman will be key to Australia's hopes of success in their four-test series against the world's top-ranked team.
"He is a world class bowler we all know that. He has been hampered by injuries quite often, but the way he has evolved as a bowler, it's been outstanding," Kohli told reporters on Wednesday.
"He has learned the art of reverse swing and bowling with the old ball as well. It's amazing to see the way he has developed his skills. That's something that every cricketer in the world would admire.
"Like you admire world class batsmen, you admire world class bowlers as well and you respect their skills and Mitchell is one of them.
"He has really taken his game to the next level and that's why he is counted among the top bowlers in world cricket and deserves to be there because he has worked really hard and the results are evident."
Australia, ranked second in the world, have lost their last nine tests in Asia and opted to pack their squad with four specialist spin bowlers to bog down an Indian side unbeaten in their last 19 tests.
PRAISE FOR SMITH
Kohli said he was not surprised that the opposition were not leaning on their traditional strength of attacking with fast bowlers.
"Coming to India, playing in summers. Wickets are meant to be dry and they are meant to turn," Kohli said.
"You will have a stronger spin bowling attack then getting six, seven fast bowlers. That is a pretty natural selection."
Earlier this month, the 28-year-old Kohli became the first cricketer to hit a double century in four consecutive test series and his team posted 600-plus totals in three consecutive tests, another first.
Kohli is second in test rankings behind Australia counterpart Steve Smith and lauded his opposite number for developing himself into a top-class batsman. Captaincy had brought out the best in both of them as batsmen, Kohli said.
"He has been performing consistently with the bat and as captain as well," Kohli said.
"The captain's responsibility has urged him to focus a bit more in certain situations and push that bit extra for his team, and that has shown in his performances. He is the number one test player in the world and there's a reason for that.
"I have seen him in the academy when he was never a dominant batsman. It's a remarkable achievement for someone starting his career as a leg spinner."

Virat Kohli lauds the impact of Anil Kumble on his captaincy

The 28-year old India skipper believes that Kumble has helped him channel his aggression.
It has been almost a year since both Anil Kumble and Virat Kohli came together to form perhaps one of the strongest partnerships between captain and coach. This is also evident in the manner in which Kohli has played in recent times and captained the side with Kumble having a considerable impact on his decision making as skipper as well. Speaking about the same, the incumbent Indian captain went ahead and said that Kumble had channeled his aggression into much better terms.
“To an extent, yes (I would say). I was working on those things already on a constant basis. I wanted to learn from my mistakes and evolve as a person. Anil Bhai coming into play channelled it much better in terms of his experience,” Kohli said.
“He was a very aggressive player in his head as well. But he knew when to use that aggression and how to channel it. So he has helped me in that aspect a little bit,” he added.
The India skipper also went ahead and added a few words about Kumble as a legend. “Apart from that, what he has really brought into the side is the mindset of taking wickets as bowlers. He was a spinner but used to think as a fast bowler, he was that aggressive with his thinking. That’s why he ended up taking the highest Test wickets (619) for India.
“The way he thought about getting batsmen out, the way he used to set them up. And the way he worked on his fitness and skills as well. So everyone takes a lot of inspiration from him,” gushed Kohli in praise of the 46-year-old Kumble.
“He has been a legend of Indian cricket and we are really glad to have him in the change room,” he concluded.

Recently, Steve Smith has given his teammates a green signal to sledge Indian players if required. Speaking about this, Virat Kohli said as per the quotes on cricbuzz, “See, I am really good friends with them. I know them really well off the field. But I know where to draw the line of friendship as well. When you step onto the field, I could be playing against my real brother it does not matter. So it’s fine, if they had to criticise me, I would have been okay with it, it’s not something coming out of my mouth. So I have no control over it. I am pretty focused and aware of what I need to do as a player on the field and what my team needs to do to win Test matches and series. I don’t know the reason behind it, there might not be any reason, I am not here to speculate. But I can say I am really great friends with these guys off the field, we really get along well. On the field we are professional enough to realise that it’s a competition but off the field we are comfortable with each other.”

Irfan Pathan’s message for his fans after the IPL 2017 Auction

Irfan Pathan’s message for his fans after the IPL 2017 Auction

Irfan shared a story where he was told that his time was over but he defeated everything that came in the way and was back in the Indian team.
Quite a few players over the years have proved what determination can do leading their comebacks on the back of sheer will and hunger to represent the national team again. We recently saw that in Ashish Nehra finding his way back in the Indian team at 36 and also Yuvraj Singh who roared in the home series against England. Allrounder Irfan Pathan who wasn’t signed in the IPL 2017 Auction is also one among the comeback men as well.
His career was marred by injuries and the only reason he didn’t play the number of matches someone as talented would ideally play at the international level is because he picked injuries at wrong times. A lot of his fans were irked when Irfan didn’t find buyers despite a modest base price of 50 lakh. He received numerous calls from journalists asking for his response but he didn’t want to give them fodder for TRP.
He is one of those cricketers who is well backed on social media platforms by his fans so he chose to send out his message to those concerned via this medium. Irfan posted a touching story and assured his fans to keep faith and that he might seem to be down at this moment but he is definitely not out.
Irfan wrote- “In 2010, I had undergone 5 fractures in my back. The Physio said to me that I might not be able play cricket ever again & should rather give up on my dream. At that time I told him, I can bare any pain but can’t bare the pain of not playing this beautiful game for my country.”
“I worked hard & not only played cricket again but made a come back to the Indian team. I have faced many obstacles in my career & life but never gave up, that’s the character I have & will posses that forever. Right now I have this obstacle in front of me but I will get thru it with all the prayers & wishes coming to me. Just wanted to share this with all my fans who are still supporting me.” The allrounder who was a part of the World T20 champion team in 2007 and the Champions Trophy winning team in 2013 said.
